Tuesday Is Last Day For Howard Johnson's Restaurant In Bangor, Maine

BANGOR, Maine (AP) — Fans of the Howard Johnson's restaurant in Bangor have one final day to get their fill of clam strips, ice cream and other menu items.

Tuesday is the last day of operation for the HoJo restaurant. After that, there will be only one left, in Lake George, New York.

In Bangor, the new owners have been talking about closing the restaurant for some time because of declining business.

At one time, Howard Johnson took restaurant franchises to a new level. The orange-roofed eateries once numbered more than 800, and they got their start before the ubiquitous Howard Johnson's hotels.

In Bangor, one of the waitresses has worked since it opened in 1966. Kathe Jewett calls the closing "bittersweet."

The motel isn't affected by the closing, and remains open for business.
