Hit-And-Run Investigation Leads To Animal Cruelty Charges
NEW BEDFORD (AP) — New Bedford police say an investigation into a hit-and-run crash has led to an arrest on animal abuse charges.
Police have arrested 43-year-old Danny Santos after finding scores of animals in his home. Some animals were dead. He was charged with nine counts of animal cruelty.
It was not known Sunday if he's represented by a lawyer.
Police say they received reports early Saturday morning of a vehicle hitting parked cars and leaving.
Investigators went to Santos' home and saw through a window several dogs that appeared to be malnourished.
Police called animal control and removed seven malnourished dogs, a cat and two dead cats. Skeletal remains of seven chickens and three rabbits were found in a backyard shed.
Police said five cages contained animals.
