Heyman On Gresh & Zo: Unlikely Giancarlo Stanton Gets Traded This Winter
BOSTON (CBS) - CBS Sports baseball insider Jon Heyman joined hosts Andy Gresh and Scott Zolak on 98.5 The Sports Hub's to talk about a number of topics, starting with the newly acquired Cuban outfielder Rusney Castillo.
Some have speculated that Castillo will be used as a trade chip for Marlins outfielder Giancarlo Stanton, but Heyman says otherwise.
"I think $72 million tells you that the plan is that he's going to be the starting centerfielder. That's the hope. That's a lot of money, $10 million dollars, to an unproven player," said Heyman.
A couple weeks ago, Heyman told Gresh & Zo that the Red Sox will make an aggressive offseason push for Stanton, and while the Red Sox have the pieces to make it happen, Heyman now says it's unlikely that Miami trades the slugger this winter.
"I don't think they'll package Rusney because that's $72 million for the Marlins. They definitely can form quite a good package. I'm not sure anything's enough to get Stanton at this point," said Heyman. "The Marlins aren't in any way anxious to trade him. They still have him for two more years and I think trading him will be a long shot this winter."
Heyman added that if the Marlins get off to a bad start in 2015 then all bets are off. The Marlins slugger is hitting .299 this season with 33 home runs and 97 RBI.
While the Sox might not be able to acquire him in a trade, they can take solace in the fact that Stanton's unlikely to re-sign with Miami once he becomes a free agent.
"I just don't think he sees the Marlins at the long-term answer."
