2 Massachusetts Men Accused Of Helping Ex-Nissan Chairman Escape Japan In A Box
HARVARD (CBS) - Former Green Beret Michael Taylor and his son, Peter Taylor, are accused of helping former Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn sneak out of Japan last December.
The US Department of Justice says the father and son were arrested in Harvard on Wednesday.
Carlos Ghosn was out on bail awaiting trial on financial misconduct charges.
The Japanese Government is asking for the father and son to be extradited to face charges in that country. A third man is also accused of helping.
Court records detail an elaborate escape, saying that Peter Taylor met with Carlos Ghosn seven times and traveled to Japan: "First in July 2019, then in August 2019, and again in early December 2019."
The documents go onto say Michael Taylor and another man used a large box to smuggle the former CEO out of a hotel then the country saying: "There is no image of Ghosn leaving Room 4609. Instead, Ghosn was hiding in one of the two large black boxes being carried by Michael Taylor and Zayek."
"Once at the airport, their baggage passed through the security check without being checked and was loaded onto a private jet."
On December 31st, the former Nissan CEO made it public he was in Lebanon.
"There is a lot of really fascinating pieces of this story," said WBZ Legal analyst Jennifer Roman.
WBZ Legal analyst Jennifer Roman said the Taylors' first court appearance today would be a probable cause hearing.
"If they choose to fight the extradition charges, then they could be here for quite sometime before a decision is actually made they should be extradited," said Roman.
WBZ-TV went to the Taylors' home for comment, but no one came to the door.
