Man killed in partial foundation collapse at construction site in Hanson
HANSON - A man is dead after a partial foundation collapse at a construction site in Hanson.
Police said they were called to a home on Dwight Street around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday after a foundation partially collapsed. The county's technical rescue team was also brought in. Plymouth District Attorney Timothy Cruz said the homeowner, who was home at the time, was having his basement waterproofed. Cruz said workers were digging a trench and the foundation broke away from the home and fell, trapping the victim underneath.
The victim has been identified as 51-year-old Gerceir Osvaldo DeFaria of Brockton. Crews have since stabilized the home and it took about three hours before DeFaria's body was removed just before 3 p.m.
"I don't know what happened," said Josue Faria, DeFaria's brother. "My mom, my brother's in Brazil. My heart is broken."
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is also assisting in the investigation.
