Groups In Hanover Shipping 300 Care Packages To Troops Overseas

HANOVER (CBS) -- We might not hear about the needs our troops have serving overseas as much as we used to, but they need basic necessities as much as they need to feel supported.

Now, it's packing time to take care of our troops serving overseas.

Tim Payson's son is a Marine deployed in the Middle East.

"To come down and support the troops is fantastic," he said. "Without them, we wouldn't have this great country."

McGee Toyota of Hanover turned their showroom into a work room. Their employees donated more than $3,000 for items. Members of the community also dropped off supplies.

"Beef jerky, toilet paper, we're packing hand sanitizer, deodorant, socks. All to be shipped overseas," Emily Spencer said.

Spencer's husband is on his third deployment. This time, he's in Afghanistan. Her organization, Artillery Group, is paying to ship the hundreds of boxes. She knows how much these shipments mean.

"For him it's a really nice show of support to know our local communities are coming forward," she said.

"They look forward to getting the boxes, they love the food," Sara Payson  said.

The care packages are important to the troops, but also uplifting for their families.

"They don't have a vacation, they don't have a day off," Sara Payson added. "They work 14 to 15 hour days. It means a lot to all of us."

"It takes everybody to chip in, whether or not they have someone," Tim Payson said.

The goal was to pack 200 boxes. They exceeded that, and 300 care packages are ready to go.
