Gresh & Zo: Does Tom Brady Need A Stud Receiver As He Ages?
BOSTON (CBS) - Thursday on the Gresh and Zolak Show on 98.5 The Sports Hub, the guys discussed the New England Patriots, Tom Brady, and his options at the wide receiver position.
There was a message sent in by a texter that raised a great point: who was the stud wide receiver when the Patriots were winning Super Bowls? Gresh and Zo discussed this at length.
"For me, being at the quarterback perspective," said Zolak. "You would love to have that stud. But for 14 years, he really hasn't had it until they went and got Moss. Because lets face it, Welker's not a stud receiver. When we say stud receiver, don't we need to take that national perspective, like how are they viewed?"
Gresh and Zolak talked about former Patriots wide receivers Wes Welker, Troy Brown, and Deion Branch. And although Tom Brady loved them and trusted them in key situations, neither Welker nor Brown are considered "stud" receivers throughout the National Football League.
"Troy brown, God I love him to death, he's not a stud receiver," said Zolak. "But he was big to him (Brady) in the clutch. You go back to championships, I mean Deion Branch got a contract after the MVP of the Jacksonville Super Bowl, but my God, he's not a stud wide receiver. Never really was. This team won championships as a team."

That was the sentiment that Gresh and Zo stressed throughout their segment: the Patriots are going back to their old ways of being a team: having a defense just as good as their offense and vice versa.
The guys talked about the current Patriots offense and the two main things that they need to do this year: score points and control the ball and time of possession.
"You can have 28 minutes time of possession," said Gresh. "If you're putting 30 on the board every week, that doesn't bother me. Just don't put the defense in a position to where there's going to be more pressure on them because they're sloppy with the ball."
Over the years, Tom Brady has had to pick up the slack due to the lack of a stud receiver he has the ability to throw too. However, with a much improved Patriots defense and hopefully improved running game, the Patriots will be more of a balanced team. And with their improvements they made in the off-season, they hope that can lead to Super Bowl victory.
