#GivingTuesday Becoming Part Of Holiday Shopping Tradition

BOSTON (CBS) – Black Friday and Cyber Monday are officially in the past. Next on the holiday calendar is a day that focuses on giving rather than buying.

#GivingTuesday is a global movement aimed at giving back either financially or by volunteering time to charitable organizations on the first Tuesday following Thanksgiving.

More than 20,000 partners are now involved in the event, with several thousand others around the world as well.

In some cases, organizations offer double or triple matches when donors make a financial contribution to a charitable cause.

"Everybody loves the idea of a bargain so it's a really wise time and opportunity, particularly when people are in that sort of bargain hunting mode," Chrysula Winegar, one of the campaign organizers, told WBZ NewsRadio 1030.

Giving Tuesday was created in 2011 by a group of friends in New York City who were sitting around their Thanksgiving table.

The main idea behind Giving Tuesday is to raise money for organizations, but volunteerism is a focus as well.

"This movement is also about giving time and really thinking about how we contribute as individuals, as families, as consumers, as companies, across the board," said Winegar.
