6-Year-Old Girl Falls Out Window Of Dorchester Home

DORCHESTER (CBS) – A six-year-old girl was rushed to the hospital early Friday morning after she fell out of a window in Dorchester.

It happened at a home on Magnolia Street around 2 a.m.

The girl fell out of a window on the top floor of the three story building.  Police said she was conscious and talking to officers when they arrived.  She told them she fell by accident.  Her parents were home at the time.

She was taken to Boston Medical Center with what authorities described as "non-life-threatening injuries."

Investigators were seen taking a closer look at the window, which had safety bars and a screen, after the incident.

"It's heartbreaking," said Eugene Barros of the Boston Public Health Commission, "because one incident is too many. Window guards are the primary prevention in terms of window falls because they're strong enough. They can withstand about 150 pounds of pressure."

Window guards are not required in Boston homes, but they are recommended.

The Dorchester Bay Economic Development Corporation owns the property and it's managed by WinnResidential. They issued this joint statement Friday:

"We are happy to hear that the child's injuries are not life threatening. New window units and child safety guards were installed in this apartment and were inspected before the apartment was occupied in February. We are working with the Boston Police to understand what led to this morning's incident."

This is the fifth child that has fallen from a window in the last two weeks in the greater Boston area.

Back on Monday, a 5-year-old girl died after falling from the fourth-floor window of an apartment building in Brookline.
