Getting Fit For 2015
BOSTON (CBS) - A study done by the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) estimates that almost 80% of adults do not get enough exercise.
If your resolution is to be fit, be realistic about this goal. A goal of training for a marathon will more than likely lead to failure. A goal of walking 3 miles a week is more realistic.
Any activity is good. Park your car at the back of the lot if it is safe and add a few minutes of walking to your schedule every day.
Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Lift weights while cooking dinner. Walk the dog. Clean your home. Grocery shop for an elderly neighbor. Go dancing.
If money is not a problem, join a gym or the Y. The Y being the cheapest choice. Look for a gym where you can do a month-to-month membership. An article in the AARP bulletin claimed that 60% of gym memberships go unused after just one or two visits.
Ask the gym if you could try a few of their classes as well as the machines. The offerings might include yoga, Zumba, spin class, etc. You want some place you will feel comfortable and will continue to use. Working out with a friend might be helpful.
If your budget is flexible, how about a treadmill or bike for your basement? Long ago I figured out that having the equipment at home would be cheaper than a gym membership. At our house, I have a 23-year-old treadmill, a newer recumbent bike, a mat for leg lifts, some free weights and a VCR connected to an old TV. The best part, I can exercise when I want to.
If the budget is really tight and you don't mind the cold, walk outdoors. I would prefer to be outdoors but I hate to walk with frost building up on my face mask as I walk. So I retreat indoors for the worst part of the winter.
The malls are also available for walking but you will need to drive there. Go with a friend, you'll be more committed if you have to pick someone up every morning.
