Frigid Temps Grip Southern New England

BOSTON (AP) — A deep chill has settled over southern New England in the wake of a two-day storm that hit the region, with temperatures hovering below zero degrees over most of the area at the beginning of the weekend.

The National Weather Service says temperatures began climbing above zero on Saturday morning. Meteorologist William Babcock says that at 9 a.m., the Massachusetts town of Orange was the coldest at 10 below zero. In Connecticut, the coldest temperatures were recorded at Willimantic at 2 degrees below zero. T.F. Green Airport in Warwick registered 4 degrees, but the northwestern part of the state could be much colder.

Temperatures will rise slowly into the 20s to lower 30s by Saturday afternoon.

Babcock says arctic air that poured into the region at the beginning of the year contributed to the deep chill.
