Firework Thrown From Car Sparks Fire In Franklin; Police Search For Driver

FRANKLIN (CBS) – Franklin Police are searching for a driver who is throwing fireworks from a moving car. Video captured one of the incidents on East Street on July 3.

"When you're dealing with fireworks, which are explosives, there can be unintended consequences," Franklin Police Sgt. Brian Johnson said.

Police say someone threw a firework from a dark colored Toyota Corolla and it exploded under a car sitting in a driveway. It caused a fire that destroyed the vehicle.

"As that firework ignites it shoots up a driveway and it catches the vehicle that's in the driveway just right, you couldn't duplicate it if you tried," Sgt. Johnson said. "It ends up catching the vehicle on fire. The vehicle burns to the ground."

Investigators say it could have been much worse. Franklin firefighters with police got there fast and stopped the flames from spreading to the home and helped the frightened family inside get out safely.

It's been more than three weeks since the fire. Investigators have a quick look at the suspect's car, but they hope the driver will do the right thing.

"The victims in this crime here, now they are going to be out some money. There's a lot of hassle they'll have to go through. They don't deserve that," Sgt. Johnson said. "Your actions have consequences. We're hoping that you'll come forward. You'll feel some remorse."

Police believe this same suspect was throwing fireworks in the area in the days before too. Anyone with information is asked to call Franklin Police at 508-528-1212.
