Fowler Spurns Orioles, Re-Signs With Cubs

By Johnny Carey, CBS Boston

BOSTON (CBS) -- An AL East rival of the Red Sox just got a little bit weaker, and most likely, a whole lot more frustrated.

Dexter Fowler, who was reportedly set to join the Baltimore Orioles on a 3-Year/$35 million contract, re-signed with the Chicago Cubs Thursday on a one year deal with a mutual option for a second year, according to Ken Rosenthal.

This news comes as a shock, considering how widely accepted his deal with Baltimore had become. Orioles star outfielder Adam Jones took the time Wednesday to talk about the addition of Fowler, even noting that they had spoken about their future in Baltimore.

"He's excited. He should be on his way now," Jones told The Baltimore Sun. "I know he was a little frustrated with the process of free agency. Trust me, he isn't the only one."

"With Fowler, someone who has proved he can play 150-plus games in a season, it just gives us stability," added Jones. "And he can play center field also. It just gives us stability because he's an everyday player."

"I don't know about the uncertainty about [Yovani] Gallardo, but I know we've got [Dexter] Fowler, so I think we're just constantly improving and not just improving on the field, but mentally."

Now the questions will shift to why Fowler switched his mind at the last minute, and whether or not his decision will take a toll on the psyche of Baltimore. It will certainly be interesting to hear what Jones has to say after hearing the news.

Fowler hit .250 with 17 HR, 46 RBI and 20 stolen bases to go along with stellar defensive play last season in Chicago. His change of heart will not only hurt Baltimore, but will help add to a Cubs lineup that may have already been the best in baseball.
