DA: Fitchburg Police Shoot Knife-Wielding Suspect

FITCHBURG (CBS) –Worcester District Attorney Joseph Early said two Fitchburg police officers shot and injured a man who was wielding a knife.

On Friday night just before 11 p.m., police were called to Pearl Hill Road when a resident said an armed man attacked him.

When officers arrived, Early said 26-year-old Leominster resident Richard Hurley confronted police, still waving the knife.

According to Fitchburg police, Hurley charged at the two officers despite their orders to drop his weapon.

When Hurley ignored several commands, the officers fired multiple shots.

Hurley was transported to Leominster Hospital and eventually brought to University of Massachusetts Medical Center in Worcester.

He was in intensive care as of Saturday afternoon with multiple gunshot wounds.

The victim of the initial knife attack was hospitalized with a hand injury.

Both police officers have been placed on administrative leave while the shooting is investigated.
