Filming Underway For Whitey Bulger Movie In Cambridge

CAMBRIDGE (CBS) - Movie crews spent their second full day shooting the new Johnny Depp film "Black Mass" in Cambridge as crowds of people gathered on nearby sidewalks hoping to catch a glimpse of the star.

"It's cool," exclaimed Linda Bettencourt, as she stood on Cambridge Street, cell phone in hand, ready to take a photo. "I grew up around here!"

Until the end of the month, Warner Brothers Pictures is shooting "Black Mass", based on the book by the same name, which tells the story of Irish mob boss James "Whitey" Bulger and his rise to power.

The Polish American Club on Cambridge has been reborn as Triple O's, Whitey Bulger's South Boston hangout. But on Tuesday, the front of the building was draped in heavy black cover, so crews can shoot nighttime scenes inside. Two '70s-era vintage cars were parked out front. Extras in period-appropriate costumes milled about outside between takes.

Filming is expected to last until May 24th and crew members will be in town until the 27th cleaning up and restoring the area to its pre-Hollywood look.

"Black Mass" is expected in theaters in late 2015.
