Fewer Immigrants Living Illegally In Massachusetts
BOSTON (AP) — A new study says Massachusetts is among 14 states seeing declines in the number of immigrants living illegally.
The Pew Research Center examined trends nationwide from 2009 to 2012. It says Massachusetts and New York were the only Northeast states where the numbers of immigrants living illegally fell.
Pew says Massachusetts had 180,000 such immigrants in 2009, but the total dropped to 150,000 by 2012. Most immigrants in Massachusetts are from El Salvador, Brazil and India.
The other states to see declines were Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Nevada, New York and Oregon.
The study says two other New England states — Maine and Vermont — each had fewer than 5,000 immigrants living illegally.
