Felger & Mazz: Barstool Sports' Jerry Thornton 'Hopes Like Hell' Patriots Change Defensive Model

BOSTON (CBS) - Jerry Thornton of Barstool Sports is as fervent and dedicated a Patriots supporter there is, and even he thinks the team's defensive philosophy is outdated and in need of an overhaul.

He explained why Friday afternoon on Felger & Massarotti.

"Pete Carroll, while it wasn't perfect for him here, I'm happy for him because he's figured out a way to keep defense in football," Thornton said in reference to the Seattle Seahawks' utter thrashing of the highest scoring offense in league history in Super Bowl XLVIII.

Between the Seahawks this year and the Baltimore Ravens last year, it's clear that the old cliche of "defense wins championships" still holds true in today's NFL - rule changes be damned.

"I would love to see the Patriots go after that kind of model. I think they got away from big, physical defensive backs because they thought it was legislated out of the game. Seattle proved that's not the case. There is room for Richard Shermans, Kam Chancellors and Aqib Talibs - I hope like hell they go in that direction and go away from the [Terrence] Wheatleys, [Jonathan] Wilhites and these 5'10" guys and start hitting people in the mouth again."
