Family Of Officer Hurt In Marathon Bombing Manhunt Seeks Death Benefit
BOSTON (CBS) -- The family of a Boston police officer who died suddenly after a suffering a medical emergency last year has applied for a line of duty death benefit of $150,000.
Dennis Simmonds suffered a head injury when one of the Boston Marathon bombing suspects threw an explosive at him.
"The Board is reviewing an application for a line of duty death benefit under section 100A submitted on behalf of a police officer potentially related to the Boston Marathon attack of 2013," said Nick Favorito, executive director of the Massachusetts State Board of Retirement, in a statement to WBZ-TV.
Before his death, Simmonds was set to be honored at the White House for his bravery.
The retirement board will consider the application at the end of the month.
