School bus crashes into house in Fall River

FALL RIVER — An out-of-control school bus with students on board crashed into a home in Fall River Monday morning.

Surveillance video showed the bus heading down Charles Street around 7 a.m. when it veered off the road, hit a utility pole and the front of a house before stopping.

Neighbor Zachary Astle saw the whole thing. "It was very scary. I heard like an explosion," Astle said. "I thought it was a lightning strike at first and then the school bus came out of nowhere and just wiped the whole porch off the side of this house."

Thirteen-year-old Keanu Cordero was one of four students on the bus when it crashed. The 7th grader at the Talbot Middle School says when he got on the bus Monday morning, he noticed the bus driver looked tired. "I get on. He starts driving and then he was just falling asleep right on the bus and then the steering wheel goes right and crashes into the house," Keanu said.

The bus eventually came to a stop after taking out the front porch. Police say no one inside the home was injured. There were four students and an adult monitor on the bus with the driver at the time of the crash. One student was taken to the hospital with back pain.

"The bus monitor told us to exit to the back of the emergency door," Keanu said.

Keanu's mother Joanna kept her son home from school because he so shaken up from the incident and to make sure he did not experience any pain later in the day. "I was scared because you put your kids on a school bus thinking they are going to be safe and the person driving is a responsible person and I truly don't know what happened to the young man he seemed very shaken up," Joanna Andujar said.

Neighbor Jeff Vieira says the sparks from the wire singed his cable box and caused a small fire in his house. "There were sparks up there in the wires where the cables are," Vieira said.

The bus driver was cited for negligent operation of a motor vehicle and marked lanes violation. Everyone on board the bus is expected to be OK.
