Shortly before 7 p.m. on Friday, Taunton Police and State Police arrested James Souza at a home on Stevens Street in Taunton, according to a statement released by the Bristol County District Attorney's Office.

The 22-year-old has been charged with murder and armored robbery. He is accused of killing Vanessa Courtney.

Police were called to Morton Street around 5:47 p.m. Monday after Courtney's girlfriend found her dead inside their apartment. Courtney's throat was stabbed or slashed, police say.

Investigators say Souza and Courtney knew each other, but the extent to which they knew one another is unclear.

Souza will be held in jail until his arraignment scheduled for Monday in Taunton District Court.

The case remains under investigation by police.
