Ex-Boyfriend Pleads Guilty In Drunk Driving Crash That Killed Curry College Student
DEDHAM (CBS) – The ex-boyfriend of a Curry College student admitted Friday to driving drunk and causing the crash that killed her.
Sean Jackman, 25, of Stoughton, pleaded guilty in Norfolk Superior Court to motor vehicle homicide while operating under the influence and prosecutors dropped a manslaughter charge as part of a plea deal.
He now faces three-to-five years in prison.
Jackman was drunk while driving home from a wedding in May 2013 when he hit a wall and a tree on Bolivar Road in Canton.
His passenger, 20-year-old Evan Bard of Agawam, was killed. She was a cheerleader and nursing student at Curry.
About 50 of Bard's friends and family came to court Friday dressed in pink in her memory.
Jackman addressed Bard's family for the first time since she was killed last year.
"I miss her smile. I miss her laugh," Jackman said. "I'm so sorry that I took her away from you."
Jackman's admission of guilt unleashed an hour of emotional speeches from Bard's shattered family.
Bard's mother, Barbara, told Jackman, "Sean, as a mom, my heart is sick knowing what you're going through," leaving him in tears.
"One stupid decision in a blink of an eye destroyed us,all of us. I don't want to do this anymore. I don't want to go to bed crying and sleep for two hours and wake up crying again."
"I hope her smile haunts you to your last living day," Bard's sister Leisl told Jackman.
