Fire Tears Through Everett Triple-Decker Overnight

EVERETT (CBS) -- A three-alarm fire ripped through a triple-decker home Tuesday night, displacing 15 people an causing hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage.

Everett Deputy Fire Chief Michael Ragucci said all the building's residents and their pets were able to get out, and that nobody was injured.

The department responded around 9:55 p.m. Tuesday to the fire on Floyd Street.

Heavy flames had engulfed all three floors' enclosed rear porches.

Firefighters from Boston, Chelsea, Somerville, and Malden arrived to help fight the fire. At one point, the heat of the flames melted a fire hose, and firefighters had to scramble to get it replaced.

A woman who lived on the third floor said her neighbors pounded on her door to get her out, and she credits them with saving her family's lives.

"I'm glad that we all got out," she told WBZ-TV's Anna Meiler. "Everybody. Kids, families. That's all I can say."

The siding on the homes on either side of the triple-decker were partially melted off by the heat from the fire. People in those buildings were evacuated by firefighters.

Crews were working to board up the burned homes Wednesday morning.

Fifteen people in total were displaced--eight from the building where the fire originated, and seven from the building next door.

Deputy Chief Ragucci said the Red Cross has put the displaced residents in the Windham Hotel in Chelsea.

Damage to the main triple-decker was estimated at $366,000.

The cause of the fire was still under investigation.
