Malden Mother Shot, Killed In Everett Believed To Be Unintended Target

EVERETT (CBS) -- A 21-year-old mother from Malden was fatally shot in the parking lot of an Everett restaurant early Thursday morning.

Authorities believe Ashlee Berryman was the unintended target of the shooting, according to a statement from Middlesex County District Attorney Marian Ryan.

A witness told WBZ-TV they heard seven shots fired off from close range outside Braza Bar and Grill on School Street, just before 1 a.m.

Berryman was there watching her musician boyfriend perform.

Carol Brown, the victim's aunt, says her niece was handing out CDs to help promote his album.

Berryman was rushed to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Alx Berryman, the victim's sister, had a message for the shooter.

"You just took away a three-year-old's mother," she told WBZ-TV. "Maybe you don't have a mother and that's why you're such a monster."

There have been no arrests.

Police are looking at video from surveillance cameras in the area for clues.

Nearby residents said the parking lot is an area where crowds tend to congregate late at night.

"Ever since they opened that restaurant or club, whatever you want to call it, they've been a pain in the neck," a neighbor said.

Vicent Naso, who lives near the restaurant, says the shooting woke him up, and he watched the scene from his balcony.

"When they come out of the restaurant to hang around the parking lot, they make a lot of noise," he said.

"It is troubling to think that someone would disrupt our community by callously taking the life of another," Mayor Carlo DeMaria said in a statement on Thursday.

"On behalf of the City of Everett, I am offering my sincere condolences to the family of the deceased. Our thoughts and prayers are with them as they are faced with this cruel reality."
