Environmental Concerns Over Crane Caught In Rising Merrimack River
LOWELL (CBS) - It could be several days before crews are able to reach a crane that is stuck in the Merrimack River.
The crane was parked on a dry part of the river bed for demolition work on the Lowell Bridge. But melting snow from unseasonably warm weather caused the water level to rise, trapping the crane.
Environmentalists are concerned that the crane could shift and tip over or begin leaking fuel.
Officials say the crane is stable and has showed no signs of any fuel leaks. They also indicate they are constantly monitoring the situation and they expect the water to recede over the next several days, at which point they will be able to access the crane.
