Employee Hit And Killed By Bus At Charlestown MBTA Facility

BOSTON (CBS) - Boston Police and Transit Police are investigating a deadly accident that happened at the Charlestown MBTA bus yard Monday morning.

"Obviously someone who was well liked by his colleagues and performed admirably in his duties here at the T," said MBTA General Manager Steven Poftak.

MBTA GM Steven Poftak says the victim, 62-year-old Bernadin Etienne, was a bus driver who work for the T for 18 years.

"I have had the opportunity to speak with several members of his family and convey of behalf of the entire organization and behalf of the board our deep regret at his tragic passing," said Poftak.

The accident happened just after 5:00 a.m. Monday. The MBTA says Etienne was struck by a bus while reporting to his bus. He was taken to Mass General Hospital where he later died.

For hours Monday, investigators were on scene documenting the bus before it was eventually towed away.

"Obviously it's a terrible tragedy we'll conduct a thorough investigation and make sure any safety issues are addressed," said Poftak.

The MBTA is providing resources to any employees impacted by Monday's tragedy.
