Billerica Firefighter Dies In NH Snowmobile Crash

NORTH STRATFORD, N.H. (CBS/AP) — An off duty Billerica firefighter was killed during a snowmobile crash in New Hampshire.

New Hampshire Fish and Game officers said a Dunstable man died after crashing into a tree in the North Stratford.

On Friday afternoon, the Billerica Fire Department confirmed that David Silva, 39, was the victim of the crash.

Fire officials said Silva became a firefighter in 2000 and was the department's Student Awareness of Fire Education (SAFE) and Senior Awareness of Fire Safety instructor.

Officers believe Silva became distracted and missed a corner before crashing at about 6 p.m. Thursday on a trail in North Stratford.

He suffered serious injuries. One companion stayed with him while another went to a residence in Columbia and called for help.

Rescue crews from Groveton, Stratford and Colebrook all responded to the scene, which was nearly 5 miles into the woods from the nearest plowed road and accessible only by snowmobile. Despite their efforts, Silva died at the scene.

Funeral arrangements for Silva have not yet been released.
