NH Conservation Officer Seriously Injured Trying To Stop Speeding Off-Road Vehicles

DUMMER, N.H. (AP) — A New Hampshire conservation officer was seriously injured Saturday while trying to stop two speeding off-road vehicles in Dummer, according to the state's Fish and Game Department.

Conservation Officer Matthew Holmes, 38, of Whitefield, was trying to stop two speeding vehicles on Dummer Pond Road when a third vehicle came from behind and struck the all-terrain vehicle he was driving, the agency said in a statement.

Holmes was thrown from the ATV and into the road, which is used by off-road vehicles and traditional vehicles. Another conservation officer working with Holmes pulled him to safety and called for medical help. Holmes was taken to a nearby hospital and then flown to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, Maine.

His injuries were considered serious but not life-threatening, the department said. The driver and passenger of the vehicle that struck Holmes were not injured.

Holmes has appeared on the Animal Planet television show "North Woods Law," according to New Hampshire Public Radio.
