Driver Sought In Fatal Brockton Hit And Run Urged To 'Do The Right Thing'

BROCKTON (CBS) – Family members of the pedestrian killed in a Sunday night hit and run are urging the driver of the vehicle to turn themselves in and "do the right thing."

At about 9:20 p.m. on Sunday, police were called to Belmont Street for a report of a pedestrian struck by a car with the driver leaving the scene.

Upon arrival, officers located Carl-Evan Yancey, 31, not far from a 7-Eleven convenience store. Yancey was transported to an area hospital, but died as a result of his injuries.

Fighting back tears, Darhl Ellison says her son was known as a gentle giant. "I'd rather have had him for 32 years than not at all," she said. "My son was a wonderful, warm, caring, generous, sensitive individual."

"It's very sad and tragic and unexpected," said Yancey's cousin Pasieau Robles.

"His spirit was always warm even from when he was a young child."

Another family member recalled Yancey as a "big teddy bear" who was constantly making people around him laugh.

Yancey worked at a nearby Shaw's for nearly 15 years, the company confirmed. He had reportedly just ended his shift at the supermarket and was walking to 7-Eleven, like he had done many times before.

WBZ-TV's Jim Armstrong reports

"He comes from Shaw's every night to get something to drink and eat then walk home," said Matthew Swenson, a friend of Yancey's who was visibly shaken by his death.

Brockton police said the driver who struck Yancey did not slow down or stop at the scene. Officers are looking at surveillance footage from the 7-Eleven.

His sister Leigh Yancey said, "If my brother hit someone he would have stopped. He would have waited until help came."

Yancey was reportedly killed by the driver of a dark colored vehicle that likely has front end damage.

"Turn yourself in. Do the right thing," Yancey's cousin Corey Robles pleaded to the driver.
