Mother of Dorchester boy who fell four stories said he leaned out window

DORCHESTER – A 4-year-old boy is in critical condition after he fell out a fourth-floor window in Dorchester on Wednesday.

Erica Moon, the boy's mother, said her son has autism and lacks a sense of danger.

"He don't even speak," she said. "And he opened the gate that's blocking my window, and he opened the window, and he leaned out and - boom - he fell out the window."

Boston Police initially said the child was an infant, but later clarified his age. Police said the boy was rushed to the hospital with "serious, life-threatening" injuries.

It happened just after 3 p.m. at a home on American Legion Highway. Witnesses said a woman who appeared to be the child's mother ran outside and lifted the child who was "motionless" before officers arrived.

Neighbor John King's son often played with the boy. "It's really unfortunate. It's unfortunate that happened, and my heart goes out to the family," he said.

Investigators were on the scene for hours, but had left by the time Moon returned from the hospital to wait for a call from doctors.

"I went running down and picked him up," Moon said. "And he wasn't breathing."
