Dorchester Charter School Recommended For Closure
BOSTON (AP) — Members of the Massachusetts Board of Elementary and Secondary Education will consider a recommendation to close an underperforming charter school in Dorchester.
Mitchell Chester, the state Commissioner of Elementary and Secondary Education, will recommend the closure of Dorchester Collegiate Academy Charter School on Tuesday morning.
The school was placed on probation nearly two years ago for its poor standardized testing scores and financial difficulties.
Officials say the school was the lowest performing of the 25 charter schools in Boston. Dorchester Collegiate serves about 200 students from grades four through eight.
A statement from the school released on Monday vows to fight the closure.
The board will vote on the issue next month. If Chester's recommendation is approved, the school will close its doors in June 2016.
