Detours in place as demolition resumes at Government Center construction site

Drivers, bikers, and pedestrians re-routed for demolition work at Government Center

BOSTON -- Expect traffic delays in parts of Downtown Boston as demolition resumes at Government Center.

Starting on Monday, portions of the area will close and won't reopen until after Labor Day. Detours will be in place.

Congress Street will be closed from New Chardon to Sudbury Street. The area will also be closed to bikes and pedestrians.

The Haymarket MBTA station will remain open for buses and train service.

Detours are expected to be in place until September 5.

Work stopped on the site in March after a deadly floor collapse killed 51-year-old construction worker Peter Monsini

Then in June, the MBTA had to suspend Orange and Green line service through the tunnels underneath the garage after a badly deteriorated support column was discovered.

A multi-billion dollar mixed used building called Bulfinch Crossing is being built in the area.
