Delta Tests Bringing Back Free Meals For Coach

NEW YORK (CBS) – Did you think the days of free meals for flyers in coach were long gone? Think again.

Delta says it has been testing complimentary breakfast and lunch in the main cabin of flights from New York to Los Angeles or San Francisco.

"We are constantly actively listening to our customers and employees, gathering their feedback and testing new products on board to continuously improve the overall experience," Delta said in a statement.

The test period started Nov. 1 and will end on Dec. 15. The airline will then decide if it wants to expand free meals to more cross-country flights.

The free breakfast options are a honey maple breakfast sandwich or a "breakfast medley." Lunch offerings include a mesquite-smoked turkey combo or a whole grain veggie wrap.

Last December, United Airlines brought back free snacks, and American Airlines soon followed suit.

Continental was the last major carrier to offer free meals in the cabin, and that was six years ago, according to CBS MoneyWatch.
