Deion Sanders On Felger & Mazz: Belichick 'The Greatest Coach To Grace The Sidelines'
BOSTON (CBS) - The always-entertaining Deion Sanders joined 98.5 The Sports Hub's Felger & Mazz on Radio Row Wednesday afternoon, and had plenty on his mind.
Sanders isn't a fan of a cold-weather Super Bowl, and thinks it's a no-brainer for the Red Sox to give David Ortiz a contract extension. As for football on the field, the Hall of Famer laughed when asked if Wes Welker's pick on Aqib Talib in the AFC Championship was an illegal hit.
"No it wasn't illegal. It's a pick play. Welker ran the play for (the Patriots) and now they're mad? When he ran it for the Patriots was it fine then?" he asked. "It's a good, clean play, but unfortunately one of the best defensive players (the Patriots) got injured. And that played a significant role in the game. After he went out, it was a birthday party for Demaryius Thomas."
Bill Belichick went out of his way to call out Welker for that play the next day, a move that surprised a lot of people who cover the normally-reserved Patriots coach. But Deion wasn't surprised, given Belichick's competitive nature.
"No, because he wanted to win. And he hasn't won it all in a long time. Emotions come out and the realness and trueness of it. That was really authentic from him," said Sanders.
"I think he's the greatest coach to grace the sidelines, I really do," he said. "And I think Tom Brady is one of, if not the greatest, quarterback to grace that position, because of what he has to work with. I don't think any guy with what Tom Brady had to work with would have gotten that far. It's unbelievable."
Felger and Mazz have been asking each of their guests this week how much longer Tom Brady can go on being a great quarterback. Sanders said you can't put a number on it, because it's up to Brady.
"Until he has that feeling that he doesn't want to be the best," said Sanders. "When you have great players like Tom Brady, they're not in a time capsule. It's when he has the feeling that he doesn't want to compete to be the best, that's when it's over. Only he knows that, not us."
