89-Year-Old Man Dies Two Weeks After Assault, Robbery At His Dedham Home
DEDHAM (CBS) -- An 89-year-old man has died two weeks after being assaulted and robbed inside his Dedham home in late May.
Ignazio Chermesino passed away Saturday morning, according to a statement released by the Norfolk District Attorney's Office.
Neighbor Sava Kelasidis told WBZ-TV's Chantee Lans he called 911 after the man had been attacked at his Upload Road home on May 27. He was hospitalized following the incident.
"The old man was (on) the stairs and I saw blood on (his elbow) and his knee, but I did not know there was a head injury as well," he said.
Neighbors Gerry Pistorio and Stephen Mosca say that "it's sad" what happened to Chermesino. Chermesino's son told WBZ that his father was a good man and did not deserve this.
Nicholas Durfee, 35, of Roslindale has been charged with a felony count of daytime breaking and entering, assault and battery on a person over 60 and unarmed assault to rob.
Durfee is being held on $100,000 bail after pleading not guilty Thursday in a Dedham court. His next court date is scheduled for July 8.
The Medical Examiner will be conducting Chermesino's autopsy. The incident remains under investigation by police and charges could be upgraded, investigators say.
