Debris Falls From BU Bridge Onto Mass. Pike
BOSTON (CBS) – At the height of the evening rush Friday, a two by three foot chunk of debris came loose from Commonwealth Ave., right at the BU Bridge. It fell right through the road surface below onto a Mass. Pike work site.
Nobody was hurt but it snarled the commute big time.
"I'm not surprised riding through here on my bike I can definitely tell that the road needs some work, there are definitely pieces that are kind of falling apart," a cyclist said.
Part of the Green Line on Comm. Ave. had to be shut down, passengers forced to get on buses for part of the trip.
"It was kind of chaotic," one rider said. "We got on the T down at Boston College and intended to take the T to Boylston and we were told we had to get off."
It was a perfect storm of traffic misery. A busy Friday night, the Red Sox hosting the Yankees, U2 playing at the Garden, and a charity hockey game at BU.
"That's Boston," a woman said. "Everything's messed up. The whole urban planning is terrible so what do you expect."
Work crews are trying to figure out what caused the chunk to fall. Many people say it is just old age.
"There's some serious infrastructure that needs to be fixed here," a man said. "You drive all along here and anywhere in the Allston-Brighton area and you see nothing but potholes and cracks."
No doubt, it was a test of patience, but some seemed to pass that test with flying colors.
"Hey it's Friday night," another woman said. "It's a gorgeous night, just go with the flow."
