Red Sox Pay Tribute To David Ortiz With Massive Portrait In Center Field Grass

BOSTON (CBS) – The Red Sox are planning to pay tribute to retiring slugger David Ortiz in a big way this weekend. Though the team has kept its plans a secret so far, one massive part of the festivities can be seen from above.

WBZ-TV's SkyEye spotted a much-larger-than-life portrait of Ortiz cut into the center field grass at Fenway Park.

The portrait shows Ortiz pointing to the sky as he does after each home run he hits.

A night after the Red Sox clinched the American League East crown, the team wraps up its regular season road schedule in the Bronx against the Yankees on Thursday night.

Then on Friday, Boston opens a weekend of Ortiz-centered festivities at Fenway Park with three games against the Toronto Blue Jays.

Team officials have said they have pregame celebrations planned for Ortiz prior to all three games as he readies for his final postseason before retiring.

The specifics have not been announced, but fans are asked to be in their seats early prior to each game.

The Red Sox asked fans to be seated by 6:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday. For Sunday's game fans should be in their seat by 2 p.m.

Boston will open the American League Division Series on Thursday, though the time and opponent are yet to be determined.
