Police: New Bedford Woman Arrested After Striking Officer, Fleeing

DARTMOUTH (CBS) -- Dartmouth Police arrested a New Bedford woman Wednesday night who they said hit an officer with her car and drove away.

Police said 33-year-old Alanna Baylies was found slumped over the wheel of a blue 1998 Nissan Sentra at Jones Park around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday by officers responding to a report of a suspicious vehicle.

They said Baylies came to just before the officer could open her car door, then put her car in reverse, knocking the officer to the ground.

The officer had called in Baylies' registration plate, and other officers found and followed her as she tried to drive to her boyfriend's Dartmouth home. She crashed the Nissan in New Bedford on Route 18 near Union Street, and tried to run from officers before her arrest.

She was charged with assault and battery on a police officer, operating with a suspended license, failure to stop, leaving the scene of a crash resulting in personal injury, negligent operation, speeding, and resisting arrest. Dartmouth Police said she was also charged with operating under the influence of drugs because of statements she made and drug paraphernalia they found in the Nissan.

Baylies was taken to St. Luke's Hospital for evaluation after her arrest.

The officer was treated for an upper-body injury at Charleton Hospital, and later released. He is expected to be okay.
