Cruise Ship From Boston Runs Aground In Bermuda

BOSTON (CBS) – A cruise ship out of Boston was stuck in the waters off Bermuda for several hours after it ran aground Tuesday evening.

The Norwegian Dawn left Boston last Friday for a week-long trip. The Bermuda Department of Marine & Ports Services says the ship ran aground about 50 minutes after it left Bermuda on its way back to Boston.

Bermuda's Maritime Office told WBZ NewsRadio 1030 the ship had returned to dock early Wednesday morning.

According to Norwegian, the ship temporarily lost power at about 5 p.m. as it was departing King's Wharf.

"The ship's propulsion was affected and, at which time, the vessel made contact with the channel bed," a spokesperson said in a statement. "All guests and crew are safe. The ship has full power and onboard services continue as scheduled."

Rachel Hansen, from New Hampshire, is on the ship with her family.

"My family and I were having dinner and we felt a sudden halt in the ship," Hansen told WBZ-TV. "The captain came over the PA system and told us that we had lost steering and as a result of that we ran up on a coral reef and we're going to be stuck here for quite some time."

Hansen said passengers seemed stressed out, but the crew did everything possible to keep everyone calm.

"The fourth deck and below were sealed with water tight doors and the crew and the passengers are not allowed to go down there," Hansen said.

Norwegian says no passengers were injured and the ship was not leaking. After high tide Tuesday night, the ship was floated to a nearby anchorage position where it remained overnight.

There are more than 2,400 passengers on board. The ship is scheduled to return to Boston on Friday.
