Crane Topples Into Merrimack, N.H. Home

MERRIMACK (CBS) -- A crane being used for tree work in New Hampshire toppled into a nearby house Thursday, causing approximately $25,000.00 in damage, Merrimack Fire Department officials said.

The residents of the Turkey Hill Road house in Merrimack were present but not injured when the crane came crashing through their ceiling around 1:30 p.m., breaking 4-5 trusses and damaging some roofing.

An old septic tank which was located directly below one of the crane's stabilizing feet collapsed, causing the crane to fall into the sinkhole that opened. The residents of the home claim they didn't know about this old septic tank, as it is not the one they currently use.

The crane's boom was well extended at the time it fell.

The tree worker, who was either working on or around the crane at the time, was transported to Catholic Medical Center with a non-life-threatening injury. Merrimack Fire Department officials said it is believed he injured his foot on the boom.

A building inspector deemed the home safe to re-enter, though it is unknown whether or not the residents returned.
