Board Approves Plan To Consider Landmark Status For Citgo Sign

BOSTON (CBS) -- Boston's iconic Citgo Sign is safe--for now.

The city's Landmarks Commission approved a plan to consider giving the sign landmark status Tuesday night.

"The Boston Landmarks Commission voted unanimously to accept the petition submitted by one of the commissioners," said Rosanne Foley of the Landmarks Commission in a statement. "The CITGO sign is now a pending landmark."

But official status is still a few steps away.

There needs to be a public vote, and after that, the measure must go before Boston's City Council.

"The next step is to produce a study report that examines the history and significance of the sign in more detail and in light of the formal requirements for landmarks," said Foley.

The future of the sign is in jeopardy, as the Kenmore Square building below the 3,600-square-foot sign, 660 Beacon Street, is being sold by Boston University.

After an attempt to give the sign landmark status failed in 1983, public outcry led Citgo to keep it.
