William Chester wrote in a Facebook post that when he reached down to help his son, he realized he was unresponsive and lifeless. He and first responders performed CPR, but Christopher died.

"He was such a great kid. He had such a heart of gold," William Chester said. "Heaven just received the best angel that they will ever see."

The Sandown police chief said children and teachers at Christopher's school are struggling to deal with the loss.

A relative set up a GoFundMe page to help the family pay for funeral expenses, and the town of about 6,000 people has responded in an overwhelming fashion. More than $19,000 has been raised so far.

"I had to say goodbye to my best friend," William Chester said. "He was going to be 10 years old next month."
