Christmas Night Fire Damages Brockton Family's Home

BROCKTON (CBS) -- Morgan Hefler of Brockton says her family was opening up their gifts on Christmas night when a fire broke out and damaged her two-story home.

"It was scary when your house is on fire," Hefler says. "Everything is just destroyed."

The fire was started by a candle on the second floor. Morgan's father tried to use an extinguisher, but burned his hands in the process.

To make matters worse, both Morgan and her dad suffer from MS.

"We have no clothing. We ran out of the house with the clothes on our backs," she says. "Our bedrooms are a total loss."

Some of Morgan's friends started a GoFundMe campaign to help the family get back on their feet.

"Right now we have a $5,000 goal, (and) any money (that) comes in...goes to their everyday living," Demi Pantous said.

Morgan says she's also grateful this Christmas that everyone made it out of the fire alive, but knows she has a long road ahead.

"I'm trying to make the best of it. Honestly I need a place to live. I need a place to go," Hefler said.
