2-Year-Old Boy Dies In Fall From Roof Of Building In Dorchester
BOSTON (CBS) - A 2-year-old boy has died after falling from the roof of a building in Dorchester on Wednesday morning.
The incident happened in an apartment complex at 131 Columbia Road sometime around 9:30 a.m.
It's not clear who called 911, but neighbors told WBZ-TV that there were no adults around when they found the boy lying face down on the sidewalk.
According to Boston City Councilor Tito Jackson, the boy, identified as Daylan Walker, was attending a home daycare on the first floor of the building that's run by a husband and wife.
At some point, Walker managed to get out of the daycare, climb up four flights of stairs and open the door to the roof.
"The young child was not being watched at some point and was able to go up four sets of stairs," Jackson said.
Police are investigating how he managed to leave the daycare and why the door to the roof was apparently unlocked.
"The child was immediately transported to Boston Medical Center where unfortunately the child was pronounced deceased," said Boston Police Superintendent-in-Chief William Gross.
Walker's family is now demanding answers.
Walker's grandmother Lucrecia Rivera, dropped Daylan off Wednesday morning. Rivera tells WBZ-TV, the family was looking for another daycare because they were uncomfortable. Walker had only been going to the daycare for two weeks.
The owner of the daycare has been identified as Marisol Ramos. Neighbors told WBZ-TV, they couldn't believe something like this would happen on her watch.
Her husband, who helps run the daycare, but has not yet been identified by name, was taken away in an ambulance, reportedly distraught.
Parents of the remaining children at the daycare were called to come pick them up. The uncle of the boy arrived on the scene and found out it was his nephew who had taken the fatal fall. He declined to speak before heading to the hospital.
WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Lana Jones reports
According to city records, the daycare on the first floor of the building is licensed to care for up to ten children. The daycare's license has now been suspended, pending an investigation. The Department of Children and Families tells WBZ-TV, they've had no complaints about the daycare.
There's no word on whether charges will be filed.
