Truck With 40,000 Pounds Of Food Donations Arrives In Chelsea

CHELSEA (CBS) – A truck carrying 40,000 pounds of food donated by the Mormon church arrived in Chelsea on Thursday to help one of the hardest hit Massachusetts cities in the coronavirus pandemic.

Chelsea has the highest infection rate in the state.

The Mormon church has been sending trucks around the country to help people impacted by coronavirus. The truck traveled about 2,000 miles from Utah.

"It really hits home to see how this has hit people in the greater Boston area," said Bishop Alex Parent of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. "To now be able to provide direct relief is really exciting."

Once unloaded, the Chelsea Collaborative will determine how to utilize the resources.

"Can you imagine another state providing something like food, a simple thing as food for a community they don't even know," said Gladys Vega, executive director of the Chelsea Collaborative.

Vega said the delivery comes at a critical time for residents

"Food is something we have to be able to give as part of their security," she said. "I don't want anyone to have to worry about food."
