Small Plane Makes 'Belly Landing' At Chatham Airport

CHATHAM (CBS) – A pilot safely landed a small aircraft at a Cape Cod airport despite having no landing gear.

Chatham Municipal Airport on George Ryder Road was closed around 12:47 p.m. after a pilot of the 1962 Mooney made a "belly landing" on one of the runways.

Police said the single-engine plane descended with no landing gear, sustaining only minor damage in the process. The plane is owned by BB Air Inc. of Sandwich.

A 71-year-old Sandwich man was flying the plane with a 72-year-old man as his passenger. Neither men were hurt.

The runway didn't sustain an damage, police said.

A preliminary investigation may indicate possible pilot error, police say,

The airport returned to normal operations shortly after 2:30 p.m.

The FAA and MAC will be investigating the incident.
