Charlie Baker To Head National Governors' Health Care Panel
BOSTON (AP) — Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker has been named chairman of the National Governors Association's Health and Human Services Committee.
Baker, a Republican who took office in January, has worked in health care both as a state official and in the private sector.
His appointment was announced Saturday by the NGA chairman, Utah Gov. Gary Herbert, a Republican, and vice chairman, Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe, a Democrat. The committee handles issues dealing with health care, particularly federal social services programs.
Baker said he is looking forward to sharing ideas and policies with other states.
Baker was Massachusetts' Secretary of Health and Human Services in the administration of Gov. William Weld in the 1990s. He later became CEO of Harvard Pilgrim Health Care.
Earlier this week, the Republican Governors Association elected Baker to its executive committee.
