Charges Against NH Father Who Protested Book Dismissed
GILFORD, N.H. (AP) — A judge has dismissed all charges against a New Hampshire man who refused to stop objecting to a book about bullying read by his daughter's high school English class.
William Baer of Gilford complained at a school board meeting in May that parents should have been notified that the book, "Nineteen Minutes," by Jodi Picoult, was being read because it contains a sexually explicit passage.
The 50-year-old Baer was given two minutes to speak, the same amount of time as others. He protested the limit and challenged the board to arrest him. A police officer led him away and he was arrested on three misdemeanors alleging disorderly conduct.
In a ruling Thursday, a judge found Baer's actions, "impolite, but not criminal."
