Celtics Receive Sixth Overall Pick In NBA Draft
BOSTON (CBS) -- There was no lottery luck for the Boston Celtics on Tuesday night.
The Boston Celtics received the sixth overall in the 2014 NBA Draft at Tuesday's NBA Draft lottery in New York. Now it's up to team president Danny Ainge to determine if he can turn the pick into a franchise player, or package it with his many future assets to bring another star to Boston.
"Moving up is a possibility, moving down is a possibility, and moving out is a possibility. We'll explore all those things." Ainge said on a conference call following Tuesday's lottery. "I think everything's possible and it's going to be a really interesting next month."
Ainge said the Celtics were disappointed with Tuesday's outcome, but with a 34.21 percent chance at receiving the sixth overall pick heading into the night -- higher than any other pick -- they kind of expected things to end that way.
Throughout the season Ainge has said that he doesn't feel there are any franchise players in the upcoming draft, and repeated that stance on Tuesday.
"I think this draft is deep, it just doesn't have a cornerstone player from what I see," he said. "This group of guys are very young and some are more ready to play than others. That won't affect who we will pick."
Ainge said the Celtics will start to work players out in early June, with some workouts already scheduled.
The Celtics also own the 17th overall pick in the draft, acquired from the Brooklyn Nets in the blockbuster trade for Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett.
The Celtics had a 34.21 percent chance at landing the sixth overall selection, higher than any other pick, following their 57-loss campaign in 2013-14. The Celtics owned a 10.3 percent chance at landing the first overall pick, with a 11.11 percent and 12.01 percent chance at the second and third overall picks, respectively.
Boston has never received the top overall pick in the draft.

The Cleveland Cavaliers received the first overall pick for the second straight year. The Milwaukee Bucks had the best chance to land the first overall pick, but will pick second, with the Philadelphia 76ers receiving the third overall pick.
