Celtics At 7: Is Rondo Worth A Max Level Contract?

BOSTON (CBS) - What's going on in the world of the Boston Celtics? That's where Adam Jones gets you caught up on the Celtics At 7!

Rajon Rondo was held out of Wednesday night's overtime win against the Wizards - all part of the recovery process in rehabbing his injured knee and getting it back into playing form.

In the three games since his debut, the All Star guard is 7 for 27 shooting in limited minutes, and looks like a player trying to clear the mental hurdle of returning from surgery.

Celtics VP of Basketball Operations Danny Ainge talked about Rondo's return to action this morning on Toucher & Rich, and also discussed the team's desire to keep the player long term - which was expressed to him in the form of a contract offer that was later denied.

Ainge didn't discuss any specific details of the negotiations, but admitted that Rondo will probably get "star money" and "demand quite a bit on the open market."

Adam Jones discussed Ainge's comments Thursday night, and debates with Rich Keefe whether or not Rajon Rondo is worth a max level contract.

Even with the Danny Ainge stamp of approval, Jones isn't so sure of Rondo's future with the team and thinks the Celtics could get a lot in return for the player.

"The more I think about it, the more you hang onto [Rondo] past the trade deadline. And the more I think about it, you can get the biggest windfall for him at the draft."

"I look at the Jrue Holiday trade: the Sixers swapped picks last year with New Orleans and then got another first rounder. Rondo is much better than Holiday. I just look at that and I say, 'what can you get for Rondo?'" said Jones.

Assuming Ainge really does want to keep him, what's the going rate?
