Cedric Maxwell On Felger & Mazz: Celtics Have More Options At Pick No. 6

BOSTON (CBS) - When the envelopes were unveiled Tuesday night at the lottery, Celtics fans hung their head in disappointment when it was their team's logo that was revealed to have the sixth overall pick in next month's NBA draft.

Lost was the opportunity and the chance to draft a consensus surefire pick, like a Jabari Parker, Joel Embiid or an Andrew Wiggins. Instead, the Celtics would be stuck with the leftovers of the previous five teams.

Another draft lottery ended in disappointment for Celtics green teamers everywhere.

However, radio color guy Cedric Maxwell has a much more optimistic view than most. Not only is he pleased with the draft position, but he thinks it gives the Celtics more options and flexibility .

"Tough night for the Celtics, huh Max?" asked Felger to start the discussion.

"No not really. I think it actually gives you more options," said Max. "If you get pick no. 1, 2 or 3 you're going to keep that pick. You're not going to move. If you get no. 6, I think now you're thinking you can trade it. It gives you more options and possibilities.

"It depends on who you pick, who drops and who goes where. Who's to say Cleveland is going to be the smartest team in the world? You might have something come down the line at no. 6," said Max.

Maxwell claims he has no inside information, and believes if the Celtics had landed in the top three they would have kept the pick. Now, maybe they're more willing to trade their current selection in a package.

If they can't get a Kevin Love, or whoever, through a trade, Max is comfortable with his former team just selecting players in the draft with the vast number of picks they possess in future years.

In other words, Max sees the draft capital the team has and doesn't see anything wrong with building slowly. He's ready for the rebuild, where Felger and Massarotti are not.

It made for an interesting debate Thursday afternoon.
